stacked IKEA cabinets

After several evenings of assembling IKEA cabinets in front of the television (and eating cheese and crackers instead of cooking a real dinner), I spent all day Sunday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm putting together my new kitchen storage. The problem with that is that I usually do my food shopping on the weekends, and I was totally out of grub. So there I am, ordering Chinese (mmmmm…cold sesame noodles…) and scarfing it down in front of the Oscars. High carbs, too much food. And more of the same with the leftovers the next night. Ugh. I feel gross.

But have to say, I sooooo dig this new assemblage of Värde flip open cabinets that I created to fit my tiny corner space, and I think the whole design is pretty clever.

These are cabinets that are meant to hang high on a wall individually, with the doors flipping up (they have little hydraulics to hold them open like a car hatchback). I turned the bottom three upside down, bolted them together, and put 6-inch legs on them to clear the baseboards. Now they make up a freestanding unit. The top three are hanging from the wall (so as not to make one big too-heavy piece), but it looks like a single tall cabinet.

Painted_kitchen_panoramic_2I think this is so much nicer than the small cabinet I had before, though I do need to keep a step stool handy to reach the top. (I like Cosco's Rockford stool because it folds up thin enough to slide between the fridge and the cabinets.) The only problem is now it makes the whole rest of the kitchen look so low-rent! Suddenly I'm desperate to reface the cabinets to match the one I just put up. Then, that would mean new counters to match the marble I'm putting under the window. And a new color of paint, too.

Oy. Projects beget projects.

Good to see you're still working on projects. The Ikea cabinets look fantastic! This is a great idea to hide water heaters add a pull out pantry to one sided and presto hidden water heater. Mine is exposed so I traded the unsightly water heater with unsightly OSB panels.
